Today on Josh’s Big Box O CDs I featured a track from one of my favourite albums of 2006. The band is Midlake, and the song I played was Roscoe from the album The Trials of Van Occupanther. One of the biggest Midlake cheerleaders is Jason Lee from the TV show My Name is Earl. He mentions the band often. They were recently nominated for three Plug Independant Music Awards: Indie Rock Album of the Year (The Trials of Van Occupanther,) Song of the Year(Roscoe,) and Video of the Year (Young Bride.) I recently mentioned on the Rock Report that The Chemical Brothers are big Midlake fans, and singer Tim Smith will lend his voice to a song on the new Chemical’s album due out this summer.

singles.jpgAs you might know, I moved to Calgary from Toronto at the beginning of the year. I have a few relatives here, but they have the kids thing going on. I’ve made friends with people at the radio station, but many of them came from other places too.

I’m not much for meeting people in bars. It’s a tough environment to get to know someone. I’ve always found the best way to meet interesting women is through friends. Here in Calgary I don’t have a ton of local friends, so it’s kinda tough.

Out of curiosity, I started browsing some of the dating sites like Lavalife (paid), Plenty of Fish (free) and OK Cupid (free). Some interesting people there, but again it’s not really casual social, but people aggressively trying to meet people.

We’re still working on some singles events that’ll hopefully be able to bring together X-listeners who like good music for starters.

As for me…still looking, but not desperately.

Today in Josh’s Big Box O CDs I featured Dinosaur Jr. covering The Cure’s classic Just Like Heaven.

The original Dinosaur Jr. line-up are back together for a rare performance in Calgary on May 25th at Mac Hall. Should be an outstanding show.

Today on Josh’s Big Box O CDs we played Sister Havana from Urge Overkill. They might best be described as a two-hit wonder. This song did OK for them, and then they did a Neil Diamond cover - Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon - for the Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction. and here’s the video for you:

douche.jpgMy friends and I would always notice that hot girls seemed to consistently end up with douchey guys. Take a walk around Calgary, especially in some of the 17th Avenue bars, and you might see it live in person. Yesterday, one of those friends e-mailed me a fantastic website chronicling the phenomenon. Ladies and gentlemen…

This one is from the quintessential 90s indie band Pavement. I played Range Life from the 1994 album Crooked, Crooked Rain: L.A’s Desert Origins. The song I played features namechecks to Smashing Pumpkins and Stone Temple Pilots and is called Range Life. Stephen Malkmus, the main man behind Pavement still does some solo work.

Why look, it’s the video:

This time around, from Maxim magazine:

  • Bed mine: When the girl you’re dating on the side leaves her underwear in your bed, creating a potential hazard when your real girlfriend/wife comes home.
  • Girlfew: A derivative of curfew. Pertaining to the time at which a girlfriend, wife, or significant female other, tells her man he has to be home. A girlfew is normally imposed when the guy is out with his friends and she’s not invited.
  • Hit the girlfriend button: Pausing an Xbox or Playstation game because your significant other wants to chat.
  • Porky pigging: Wearing a shirt but no pants.

16270illinois.jpg Today on Josh’s Big Box O CDs we played one of my favourite artists of the last few years. Sufjan Stevens‘ album Illinoise is the second in his attempt to make an album for every state. Michigan was the first one, and is also a pretty solid album. We played a song called John Wayne Gacy Jr. about the famous serial killer.

I saw Sufjan in St. Louis this fall, and it was one of the best concert experiences I’ve ever had. There was a 14-piece band - including horns, strings, a grand piano, and more. Here’s a (not bad quality) YouTube clip of Sufjan perfroming John Wayne Gacy live:

Apparently all was not rosy during the filming of I (Heart) Huckabees.

YouTube has the uncensored arguement, but keep in mind, there are many bad bad words including the F, the C and the S:

Yikes!?
