I book-ended my long weekend with documentaries. Earlier today I watched Searching for Sugar Man. The first thing I need to say is: go see it! It’s a combination mystery and music doc, and fantastic story about a Detroit-based musician – Rodriguez – who put out two albums in the early 1970s, and then disappeared. The albums flopped in North America, and Rodriguez, well, disappeared. On the other side of the world, in South Africa, Rodriguez was a star selling close to a million albums. He was the soundtrack and inspiration to an anti-apartheid revolution. The strangest part…nobody told Rodriguez. It’s an amazing story, and one of those rare occasions when I’m watching a movie and feel a slight euphoria because it’s so good. I won’t say anymore here, except once again: see it!
